The Top Two Alternatives to A Website

My favorite thing to tell aspiring education consultants is that you do not need a website to start your consulting business and get clients! The hardest part is the start, so instead of letting everything you think you need to run a successful business right away hold you back, start with the basics. Honestly, I didn’t have a website when I first started getting clients, I started, and then the website came, because websites can be costly whether you DIY or outsource! When you're early on in your business, you may not have the financial resources to invest in a website and that shouldn't hold you back. You also may not have the time to thoroughly DIY. So there's a couple of different alternatives that you can put together if you don't have a website.

#1 - Business One-Pager: This is a great way to give potential clients the basic rundown of your business, your experience and your services. You can make something like this in a program called Canva, which is a graphic designing website that’s super user friendly. You can put together one-pagers, presentations, social media posts, and way more, but for the business one pager, I’d recommend that you use one of the ‘Marketing Proposal’ templates as a starting place for developing your business one pager, to cut down on the overwhelm.

#2 - Landing Page: A landing page is essentially a one page website. So, rather than a multi-page website that will take time and resources to create, you can just do a landing page that again, like the business one-pager, gives potential clients the basic rundown of your business. So two of the programs I’ve used are LeadPages and ConvertKit.

  • LeadPages offers a landing page and requires a fee.

  • ConvertKit provides landing pages and email marketing, and depending on the size of your business, it’s free! Anything over 1,000 followers requires a fee, but the amount depends on the amount of followers. I like this option for those of you who are just starting out because you can create your landing page specifically for your business, and you can set up the landing page to where people can provide their email address so you can begin to build your email list.

You’ll definitely want to check out pricing and their specific features to ensure that either one of those programs will serve and meet your needs, before committing to anything.

Those are my top two alternatives to a website, and I just want to share a quick example of that from one of my students. Rachel has an amazing website now, but before she had her website, when she was just starting out, she had a bomb one-pager. Rachel is a great example of betting on yourself and not waiting on the website to start bringing in revenue, because look, imma be real here, each of you are in the position to bring in revenue in the next 30 days. It’s true! So what are you gonna do? Spend time building a website or spend time talking to potential clients and finding potential clients?

Remember, you can fund your website through the clients you find with your one-pager or landing page. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, when you’re just starting out, you shouldn’t be spending money on your business. You should definitely reinvest money in your business once you earn it, but you shouldn’t need to come out of pocket for your education consulting business.
